If you spend your summers jonesing for accessible skiing but you’ve never made it to the Beartooth Mountains, then well, it serves you right. Beartooth Pass boasts almost 5,000 feet of vertical gain from its eastern origins in Red Lodge, MT to its 10,947 ft. summit. The highway accesses a variety of terrain that ranges from mellow car shuttles to multi-day cirques. What else is appealing are the lift-serviced turns available well into June at Red Lodge International Ski and Snowboard Camp. The ski area consists of two high-speed poma lifts that access some pretty burly terrain and will be the venue for the 2nd annual Beartooth Summer Session. The event runs from June 20th-24th and is being put on by ON3P at the aforementioned ski area. The session pass includes a welcome dinner, 3 days of lift-serviced skiing, 4 nights of lodging, a snow safety clinic and discounted backcountry trip with Beartooth Mountain Guides, ‘11/’12 ON3P demos, entry to the competition, and a culminating after party in Red Lodge (exact location TBD).
Although there will be plenty of next year’s ON3Pskis for everybody to try, you will need to bring your own equipment for touring outside of the ski area (AT/Tele/Splitboard setup, skins, beacon, shovel, probe, know-how). This year’s competition will be formatted a little bit differently than last year’s: Instead of having two separate competitions on two separate days (one big mountain day, one slopestyle day), the two will be merged into one “big mountain slopestyle” competition set to take place on Saturday, June 23rd. As the formats have merged, so have the venues. The course will run from top to bottom, and incorporate manmade hits and jibs into the ski area’s feature-rich natural landscape. ON3P has also rounded up a bunch of cash and gear prizes for the event, so this one could definitely be worthwhile for even the most radical of brosefs (you) to attend.
Aside from being a grass-roots event put on by a kick-ass independent ski manufacturer at one of the most unique venues in the world, Beartooth Summer Sessions’ events are also more accessible to a wider range of participants than many ski camps. Admission to the weekend’s events are available as a package as well as a’ la carte for those who can’t make the whole shebang.
